Hear the shape of a fractal

A fractal is drawn by applying one formula to every point, over and over. Each point traces its own path, its orbit. Here that path becomes sound: its sideways and up-down motion go to your left and right speakers.

  1. Press and hold anywhere on the picture to hear that point. Drag to glide from sound to sound.
  2. Listen to what it does. A point that settles into a loop plays a steady note. A restless one makes noise. One that flies away clicks once, and its path turns red.
  3. Explore. Zoom in on the edges, browse the gallery of 24 fractals, or press the round button to land somewhere random.

Headphones help. The sound moves between your ears.

Mundana is named after musica mundana, the music of the world: the old belief that orbits make music no one can hear. Here you can.

Mundana is open source. See the code on GitHub
